Breastfeeding: A Mother’s Gift
This is the third revised edition of Breastfeeding: A Mother's Gift. It features much more information. It includes asymmetrical latch-on illustrations, reverse pressure softening, newborns’ stomach sizes, breast storage capacity and attachment parenting and co-sleeping guidelines. Written for the new and expectant mom, this is an easy read and, what we like to call, mother-friendly. The first chapter includes the most extensive list of advantages of any book in print and they are all referenced for further study.
The foreword is written by Katherine Dettwyler, PhD., a noted anthropologist who has published much on breastfeeding issues. Here she discusses why breastfeeding (and not baby formula) is the normal way of infant feeding throughout the world.
The appendix includes a revised section by Thomas Hale, PhD., titled Medications for the Breastfeeding Mother. It discusses which medications may be safely taken while breastfeeding. The appendix also includes a timely section on Breastfeeding During Emergencies which tells why breastfeeding is crucial during emergencies and how to continue breastfeeding if the mother has to leave her home and how to relactate if necessary. The appendix also includes A Note to Expectant Dads explaining why a father’s support is so important and how fathers can help.
The book is organized with a table of contents, index and glossary. It includes photographs and illustrations of mothers and babies of several ethnic groups.
Breastfeeding: A Mother’s Gift, also available in Spanish, is designed as a prenatal handout in breastfeeding and childbirth classes, but also makes a delightful discharge gift. It is priced so that hospitals, WIC programs, and breastfeeding and childbirth educators can afford it. Some programs even buy this book to resell at a healthy profit. Languages may be mixed for the lowest bulk price.
